Quotes - Great Dialogues

Joy Wang : Mom, just stop! Good for you. You're figuring your shit out. And that's great. I'm really, really happy for you. But I'm tired. I don't want to hurt anymore. And for some reason when I'm with you, it just hurts the both of us. So let's just go our separate ways, ok? Just let me go!

Evelyn Wang : Ok.

[pause]

Evelyn Wang : Wait. You are getting fat. And you never call me even though we have a family plan. And it's free. You only visit when you need something. And you got a tattoo and I don't care if it's supposed to represent our family. You know I hate tattoos. And of all the places I could be, why would I want to be here with you? Yes, you're right. It doesn't make sense.

Waymond Wang : Evelyn, stop. That's enough!

Joy Wang : Let her finish!

Evelyn Wang : Maybe it's like you said. Maybe there is something out there, some new discovery that will make us feel like even smaller pieces of shit. Something that explains why you still went looking for me through all of this noise. And why, no matter what, I still want to be here with you. I will always, always, want to be here with you.

[Joy starts crying]

Joy Wang : So what? You're just gonna ignore everything else? You could be anything, anywhere. Why not go somewhere where your daughter is more than just this? Here, all we get are a few specks of time where any of this actually makes any sense.

Evelyn Wang : Then I will cherish these few specks of time.

[Evelyn and Joy embrace]

"It would be so easy if loving only gave us the beautiful. But what loving demands is that we face the fear of losing each other. That when it gets messy we hold each other close. And when we can we defiantly celebrate our brief moments of joy."

Dick Johnson is Dead (2020)

"Everyone fails at who they're supposed to be, Thor. A measure of a person, of a hero, is how well they succeed at being who they are.

I am leaving- stop talking. This is important for me, Elisa- Maybe a second chance for me- I have to go.
 He picks up the illustration.

And when I come back I- We will not talk about this. Again. There’s nothing we can do. What are we, Elisa? You and I? Nothing. What can we do? Nothing.

And- I am sorry. But it is not even human.

I was Sheriff of this county when I was 25 years old. Hard to believe. My grandfather was a lawman, father too. Me and him was sheriffs at the same time, him up in Plano and me out here. I think he's pretty proud of that. I know I was. Some of the old time Sheriffs never even wore a gun. A lotta folks find that hard to believe. Jim Scarborough'd never carry one - that's the younger Jim. Gaston Borkins wouldn't wear one up in Comanche County. I always liked to hear about the old-timers. Never missed a chance to do so. You can't help but compare yourself against the old-timers. Can't help but wonder how they'd have operated these times. (...) The crime you see now, it's hard to even take its measure. It's not that I'm afraid of it. I always knew you had to be willin' to die to even do this job. But, I don't want to push my chips forward and go out and meet somethin' I don't understand. A man would have to put his soul at hazard. He'd have to say: 'O.K., I'll be part of this world.

Devlin: Try to sit up.
Alicia: Yes. Oh, Dev. I'm afraid... I can't make it because they gave me pills to sleep.
Devlin: Keep awake. Keep talking.
Alicia: Yes. They didn't want the others to know about me.
Devlin: Keep talking. Go on. What happened? What happened?
Alicia: Alex found out.
Devlin: And the others haven't?
Alicia: They'd kill him if they knew. They killed Emil.
Devlin: Are you in pain?
Alicia: I don't know. The pills. … Say it again. It keeps me awake.
Devlin: I love you.

Now sometimes I think that artists are rather like hunters aiming in the dark. They don't know what their target is, and they don't know if they've hit it. But you can't expect life to illuminate the target and steady your aim. The creation of beauty and purity is a spiritual act.

Quite an experience to live in fear, isn't it? That's what it is to be a slave.

I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the darkness at Tannhäuser Gate. All those moments will be lost in time like tears in rain. Time to die.

In the Police Car - Marge drives.  Grimsrud sits in the back seat, hands cuffed behind him. For a long moment there, he is quiet - only engine hum and the periodic clomp of wheels on pavement seams - as Marge grimly shakes her head.

MARGE: ...  So that was Mrs. Lundegaard in there?

She glances up in the rear-view mirror.    Grimsrud, cheeks sunk, eyes hollow, looks sourly out at the road. Marge shakes her head.

MARGE: ...  I guess that was your accomplice in the wood chipper.

Grimsrud's head bobs with bumps on the road; otherwise he is   motionless, reactionless, scowling and gazing out.
MARGE:...  And those three people in Brainerd.

No response. Marge, gazing forward, seems to be talking to herself.

MARGE: ...  And for what?  For a little bit of money.

We hear distant sirens.

MARGE: ...  There's more to life than money, you know.

She glances up in the rear-view mirror.

MARGE: ...  Don't you know that?...  And here ya are, and it's a beautiful day...

Grimsrud's hollow eyes stare out. The sirens are getting louder.  Marge pulls over.

MARGE: ...  Well...

She leans forward to the dash to give two short signaling. WHOOPS on her siren. She turns on her flashers. She leans back with a creak and jangle of utilities.  She stares forward, shakes her head.  We hear the dull click of her flashers.

MARGE: ...  I just don't understand it.

[Ellen] speaks in a very low voice. Suddenly [Archer] kneels. The tip of her satin shoe shows under her dress. He kisses it. She bends over him]

ELLEN: “Newland. You couldn't be happy if it meant being cruel. If we act any other way I'll be making you act against what I love in you most. And I can't go back to that way of thinking. Don't you see? I can't love you unless I give you up.”

MARIANNE: There I fell, and there I first saw Willoughby.

ELINOR: Poor Willoughby. He will always regret you.

MARIANNE: But does it follow that, had he chosen me, he would have been content?  He would have had a wife he loved but no money--and might soon have learned to rank the demands of his pocket-book far above the demands of his heart.  If his present regrets are half as painful as mine, he will suffer enough.

ELINOR: Do you compare your conduct with his?

MARIANNE: No. I compare it with what it ought to have been. I compare it with yours.”

ASH: You idiots. You still don't realize what you're dealing with. The Alien is a perfect organism. Superbly structured, cunning, quintessentially violent. With your limited capabilities you have no chance against it.

LAMBERT: You admire it.

ASH: How can one not admire perfection. I will kill it because I am programmed to protect human life as you know.

RIPLEY: Even if you have contempt for it.

ASH: Even then.
